The fictional novel Butter by Erin Jade Lange is about a teenager boy name Butter who is overweight. Everyone at Scottsdale High knows him as Butter. Butter hides behind a screen, hiding his true identity so that he can talk to the girl he is into: perfect, sweet, sexy Anna.
He lives with his mother and father, but Butter thinks his mother blames herself for his weight. Toward the beginning of the book she state. " I used to think she was embarrassed by me, but I eventually figured she just felt guilty- like she was a bad mother for letting me get so big"(5). The relationship between Butter and his father wasn't really as close as relationship with his mother. The following line shows the two different relationships: "Mom may have stopped talking to me about my weight, but around the time I tipped over four hundred pounds, Dad stopped talking to me altogether"(12).
Also the author shows imagery and very specific details to describe a situation. "The flavors exploded over my tongue salty, sweet, spicy everything I liked all rolled into one. It has a lot of description and details throughout the story. God, I love Doritos "(4). Another description that was my favorite is "Two big Mike's burgers, fully loaded, with a double order of sweet potato fries, a chocolate - cherry shaker, and an apple pie pocket"(42). When I read this part in the text of the story it made me feel hungry.
My favorite part about this book is when Butter lies about his identity to talk to Anna the girl he likes. He lies to Anna that he attends a private school and what he looks like. Also he doesn't really care about what other students think about him or his weight, but he only cares about how Anna will react if she knows who he really is. “I didn't tell who I was. Hey, I'm that guy with the specially built oversize desk in the back of your composition class! Want to chat? Yeah, right"(6).
The book Butter has a lot of profane language I would not really recommend this book to younger kids but I would highly rate to be read by older adults or teenagers to read this book. It has a lot of description and details throughout the story.
Two things that I can relate to this book are self esteem and being bullied. When I was younger I had a nickname. Once I started getting older and older I realized I started to care less about other people's opinions. The book Butter by Erin Jade Lange talks about how teenagers at Scottsdale High who make fun of Butter and how they dare him to commit suicide. There are other types of bullying as well as verbal bullying, Cyber bulling, rational bullying, Sexual bullying and physical abuse. Butter is being cyber bullied until something extravagant happens....
